Yesterday, the Mets signed former Padres minor league shortstop Sean Kazmar.

Today, the Mets signed former top prospect Scott Kazmir (according to Baseball America's Matt Eddy)!

I'm excited about this move for both practical reasons and historical reasons.

EDIT

It turns out that Matt Eddy was a victim of the Sean Kazmar/Scott Kazmir confusion.

According to http://MLB.com, Mets have signed both minor league SS Sean Kazmar and former top prospect Scott Kazmir to minors deals.

Disregard that last tweet. Misread Kazmar as Kazmir. My apologies.

To reiterate: Scott Kazmir still is a FA. New Met Sean Kazmar is a steady defensive SS who joins O. Quintanilla as depth behind R. Tejada.

My heart has now been broken by Mr. Kazmir twice.

In other news, Victor Zambrano is still available for a spot start.

Maybe Matt Eddy simply had a premonition:

Source: if Scott Kazmir throws for scouts in Houston today as expected, Mets will send someone. Kazmir trying to re-start career.

Mets are among six teams Scott Kazmir is considering, and he could make a decision sometime in next few days.

Funny how a few days ago the number of Tweets saying Mets didn't even watch Scott as they had absolutely no interest.

The Mets didn't send anybody to watch Kazmir during his workout last week. They will this week:

We'll see Kazmir for the first time Fri. We have an open mind but a spot on the ML staff right away is not realistic.

Until he said that he'd work for a bag of Shake Shack burgers per appearance and the Mets named him their opening day starter.

Just what Rick Petersen said about Victor Zambrano.

Well, it's not Kazmir.

But a former Mets top pitching prospect is back!

RHP Kevin Mulvey has returned to the Mets on a Minor League deal

https://twitter.com/#!/MetsFarmReport/status/178506882833580032

Mulvey was one of the main pieces in the trade for Johan Santana. He was a second-round pick in the 2006 draft and pitched in the Futures game while with the Mets organization in 2007.

Mulvey has pitched in 10 major league games (with the Diamondbacks and Twins).

Sure. The cheap Mets actually filled out a rebate form on Johan! Posted Image

There are 124 pitchers who have pitched at least 1,000 innings over the years 2000 through 2011. Of those 124 guys, here are the pitchers who averaged the most pitches per inning over that period:

Scott Kazmir 17.77 pitches per inning
Oliver Perez 17.63
Al Leiter 17.57
Glendon Rusch 17.29
Gil Meche 17.25

And, as a contrast, the guys with the fewest pitches per inning since 2000 (min 1,000 IP):

Greg Maddux 13.37
Jon Lieber 14.41
Roy Halladay 14.52
David Wells 14.61
Carlos Silva 14.78
