I see Terry Francona actually replaced BV on ESPN, which means that the Red Sox essentially traded Francona to ESPN for Valentine!!!..I thought maybe they might have got a minor-leaguer in the deal as well, somebody like Joe Morgan :-) Though Valentine - and his no nonsense attitude - might be exactly what Boston needs right now....well, either that or he will totally destroy that organisation. It's guaranteed to add even more heat to the Yankees v Red Sox rivalry, could be some nice smackdown bench clearances with those guys this summer :-)

Flop as a manager in the majors? He's got a winning record after over 2000 games. Top 5 in the manager of the year voting 4 different times. And he just got hired by one of the best run organizations in the game. The Red Sox are what the Mets (and this fan, at least) wish they were.

Bobby V is a very smart baseball man. He has the ability to be a great manager, but the team has to be right. While that could be said for probably everyone except Jack McKeon, it is especially true for Booby. He makes himself the story. That is great for a team with youngsters or problem children. It deflects the media away from them. It doesn't work well with veterans or in markets that are looking for a negative story, ie NY, Boston. Bobby probably would have been very good in Miami, even better in Chicago. Boston fans do not want the manager to be the story. They want big stars with big wins. Bobby has already openly questioned management. He has publicly mentioned short comings of particular players and called out the team's chief rival. If the Sox have slow start, fans will be calling for his head. If he speaks his mind about how the team should have been built and wasn't, management will hand it to him. If the team wins, nothing he does will be wrong.

i too harbored hopes that the mets would re-hire bobby v in place of several of the guys who have held the job since he was here.
