Carter...

He was 'our' part of the Billy Wags trade.
I checked out his stats today and they are seriously underwhelming.
But I do remember there being some really positive comments about him - so...
What's up with this guy?
I think that we can 'ink' Bay and Frenchy into the corner OF spots for a bit...Belter - (when he comes back) into CF. Pagan into a role as a 4th OF (and probably starting CF for a month)...
Where will he fit in, if at all?

The Yankees put a claim on Carter last year after the Mets aquired him as the player to be named later in the Wagner trade. The move was not benifitial for the Yankees, unless you consider pissing off the Mets and Red Sox a positive for the organization.
Carter missed a chance to play last September with the Mets and the Red Sox shut him down to avoid injury and, therefore, altering the package that they would have to send to the Mets.
He could play 1B and both corner outfield positions and fits in nicely as a left handed bat off the bench, especially considering the 'pop' in his bat.
Essentially, though, the Mets ended his chances of having any use in the organization when they brought Jacobs back, who is the same hitter as Carter but with Major League experience.

BTW, Ike Davis has a sweet swing and FMart hit the ball really hard. Feliciano looked filthy against the high numbered players in the 9th.

actually the reason for the claim was beneficial to the Yankees. By putting the claim in, not only could the trade not go through, but more importantly, the Red Sox couldnt add another player to their 40 man roster, in time for September call ups and possible post-season roster action. Annoying, but well played by Cashman...

Carter was DFA'd on September 28, the same day that the Red Sox promoted Dustin Richardson.
That gave them 35 men on the Major League roster.
Carter was then officially traded on October 7, which brought their roster back to 35.
Carter was on the 40-man roster, but not the 25-man roster, so he was not eligible to play in the post season unless the Red Sox 25-man roster suffered enough injuries for the commisioner's office to permit them to promote Carter (ala Francisco Rodriguez in 2002).
A claim like this has no effect on the 25-man roster (outside of the injury scenario) and no effect on the team's playoff roster (again, injury scenario). It's only a nuisance and a burden on the 40-man roster, which the Red Sox (like most playoff bound teams) weren't even fully utilizing during September.
More than anything, it actually created a problem with Paul Byrd, who had a clause in his contract that guaranteed him a spot on the 40-man roster for the final month of the season.

i understand all this, i am just stating the reasons given by experts at the time, last season. The 40 man roster was the main one given, even though the Sox didn't utilize it, that was the strategy

.380 OBP/.510 SLG/.890 OPS in his minor league career look pretty impressive to me -- 126 minor league homers is eye-catching. Looks to me like he's hit everywhere he's played. The big knock on him I think is defensive problems at every position where he's been tried.

Hmmm...I can't disagree with that!
I'd read an article on MLB's 'At Bat' application for IPhones that insinuated something much different. Of course, 24 hours later I can't find the article.
