Major Update from the Mets?

By: E.J. Stankiewicz

After many weeks of what has felt like the internet has been broken in regards to news about the Mets, suddenly it has lit up in the spirit of Christmas. Sadly this is not because the Mets signed a free agent or pulled off the creative trade we are all desperate for. No, it is because Mike Francesa declared on his show today that he would have a "Major, major update" regarding the Mets tomorrow. Let the speculation begin.

While trying to figure out what this could be, let us look at a few things:

1) Franseca said "update" not "announcement" meaning this is the continuation of an existing story regarding the team.

2) In this era the thought that this could be an on-field personnel move that could be kept under wraps for 24 hours from the Mets and National reporters in ludicrous. We live in a twitter world where Omar Minaya can not check his voicemail (fictitiously or not) without someone tweeting about it.

3) According to some reports, the Mets Season Ticket renewals may be below 70% from last year.

4) R.A. Dickey jokes aside, the Mets have made no impact moves this off-season that would entice people to run out and get their ticket plans.

5) Terrestrial radio is currently a dying medium with the advent of I-Phones, Satellite Radio and Internet Radio. If you listen to the advertisements on WFAN it is embarrassing. Brad Benson attempting humor at the crudest sexual level and a charity with extremely questionable operating procedures that has been the plantiff in multiple cases nationwide are their two most frequent sponsors. Does anyone really think this would not be a time WFAN is desperate for a good old fashioned radio tease?

When I look at all these things I must conclude that I believe in a desperate attempt to increase ticket plan sales the Mets are going to try to sell the fans on the ballpark. I'm sure there will be an announcement of an honoring of Seaver. I would guess they will also try to come off as heroes by stating they created the Mets Hall Of Fame in what was the main retail space last year to promote the "We care more about the history of the team than we do about making money off our fans" angle. Forgetting the fact there is probably over 40,000 sq. ft. elsewhere in Citi that is used to do that. Also did anyone actually shop at the main store last year? I would venture this space produced the fewest dollars per square foot of any retail space in the ball park. If you wanted to get in there were times you had to wait on Shake Shack-esque lines. Then once you got into the store it was many slack jawed fans just pawing at the merchandise. However if you actually wanted to make a purchase in this store, generally you could get to an open register in under two minutes. All of this adds up to a space that is more for the fans to take in the atmosphere, rather than spend their dollars.

Personally I hope I am wrong. I hope we hear tomorrow that Omar has set a New Year's Eve deadline on Bay and Molina or they are moving on, but I am a Mets fan who has been trained to think differently.

Well, the Mets got Bay. This is a great move, as it does bolster our line-up significantly, but we still need pitching.

I believe Omar put this blog up on his bulletin board with a big giant "PWNED" written across it. BTW I did buy something in that store, but it totaled 2 bucks. I have to agree with your assessment here,
